ATHLETIC PHILOSOPHY

The athletic program is an important part of the educational process of our school
district and is an extension of the classroom, serving as an arena for learning. We
strive to have each student athlete enjoy a positive experience while we develop
competitive teams. Each student, athlete and coach shall be respected as a human
being and challenged to be the best he/she can be. However, the program will not
take a “win at all costs” approach. A healthy, competitive attitude is the goal for each
student. Knowledgeable coaches will vigorously teach the fundamental skills and
strategies of each sport. Athletes deciding to become a part of the athletic program
must understand that they accept the privilege and benefits of participation and
should fully appreciate that they have taken on certain specific obligations and
responsibilities.

UIL athletics are provided with the belief that the following goals may be
accomplished through membership on an athletic team:
 Competitive Greatness
 Good Health and Physical Fitness
 Good Sportsmanship and Fair Competition
 School Spirit and School Loyalty
 Moral Development and Training
 Social Skills Development
 Emotional Maturity Development

The success of the athletic program is not based solely on the win-loss record of the
teams. Instead, the goal of the program is to have each participant reach his/her
maximum potential. We coach THEM ALL.

The athletic program will provide for the safety and wellbeing of each individual
athlete. Participating athletes should experience enjoyment as well as challenges in
their sport. A vital component of the athletic program is the expectation to succeed.
The community, school, personnel, coaches, and athletes shall all strive to excel.
Being an athlete on a high school team requires dedication of time and energy.
Learning to make a commitment to oneself and teammates is invaluable in a young
person’s development. An athlete who never gives up, keeps trying and pushing
toward achieving their personal best learns that true success is attained when a
person is persistent in their thoughts, feelings, and actions. Cumberland Academy
athletic teams will exhibit exemplary sportsmanship and attitude, which have made a
positive impact with opposing teams, officials, and fans.
